Up2Us AmeriCorps Member

America SCORES is the nation’s only after-school program that empowers students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service learning. America SCORES inspires urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.  America SCORES Cleveland provides unique after-school and summer programming for 1,000 youth, teaching soccer, creative writing, and service-learning to measurably improve fitness, literacy, and community engagement.

Service Term:

  • Start Date: August 2023
  • End Date: July 31st, 2024

Hours:

  • Total Hours: 900
  • Weekly Hours: 25

AmeriCorps Living Allowance & Segal Service Award:

  • Living Allowance:  $9,000.00
  • Segal Service Award:  $3,447.50
  • Living allowance amount is contingent upon the completion of the service term as outlined in the Coach Contract

Up2Us Coaches serving through AmeriCorps must complete their assigned term of service listed above not to exceed a 12-month period. During the term of service, the coach will serve in a direct service role.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Assist program staff in providing high-quality youth sports development and literacy programming
  • Lead team of 15 students in soccer and health programming at one of America SCORES’ school sites
  • Assist or substitute for America SCORES soccer or writing coaches for practices and lessons as needed
  • Distribute and collect supplies from our school partners (uniforms, evaluations, etc.)
  • Communicate regularly with coaches at the schools to ensure program quality.
  • Attend and participate in coach training
  • Assist with the collection and inputting of program evaluation data
  • Assist with student-centered service-learning projects throughout the community
  • Oversee game day logistics and referee soccer games
  • Assist in the planning of the America SCORES Cleveland Fall Frenzy event
  • Lead soccer camps during the summer and winter (occasionally on weekends)

Additionally, the Up2Us AmeriCorps Coach will:  

  • Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport, using lessons learned at Up2Us Sports’ best in class training events
  • Perform data collection activities, as directed by your Up2Us Sports Program Manager • Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served

Up2Us AmeriCorps Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the AmeriCorps program:

  • Completion of the minimum required hours of service and training by last day of coach contract • Attendance at the Up2Us Coach orientation
  • Completion of bi-weekly timesheets
  • Attendance at days of community service
  • Attend/participate in Up2Us Sports trainings, meetings, and special initiatives
  • Attend Coach Training Institute (date to be announced by Program Manager)

The SCORES program is after school and sessions can run anywhere from 75-90 minutes (depending on the school). There are two main seasons: Fall (11 weeks) and Spring (11 weeks). Coaches are required to work the full season.  

Soccer Coach Responsibilities:

  • Use SCORES provided curriculum to run up to 2 soccer practices per week 
  • Coach poet-athletes during Thursday soccer games (3rd – 8th grade)
  • Distribute, maintain, and collect SCORES provided soccer equipment
  • Help in the distribution of SCORES issued soccer uniforms
  • Ensure poet-athletes are properly dressed for games (ie. in full uniform including uniform shirt, shorts, socks, shin guards and proper shoes)
  • Ensure safe arrival and departure of poet-athletes from practices and games
  • Complete daily attendance using the League Apps system (training provided)
  • Communicate with SCORES staff and fellow SCORES coaches at your school
  • Promote teamwork, leadership, and commitment skills
  • Attend and help at Poetry SLAM (November) and Jamboree (May)
  • Attend all trainings and coach meetings

Requirements: A successful candidate will be a team player who is committed to the mission of America SCORES Cleveland and has experience working with youth. A soccer coach must have a minimum of a high school diploma and must be at least 20 years old.

Compensation: A soccer coach is paid $40 per session. Coaches are also paid for training and special events. Professional Development opportunities are available.

Writing Coach Responsibilities

  • Use SCORES provided curriculum to run writing workshops 2 times a week (Poetry in the Fall and Service-Learning in the Spring) 
  • Assist poet-athletes in writing team and individual poems for the Poetry SLAM. Help them prepare to perform their poems at the Poetry SLAM in November (Fall)
  • Assist poet-athletes in creating and completing a student-led community service project (Spring) 
  • Gather poet-athletes’ best writing samples and submit to the SCORES staff (Fall)
  •  Distribute, maintain, and collect SCORES issued writing equipment 
  • Ensure the safe arrival and departure of poet-athletes from writing sessions 
  • Complete daily attendance using the League Apps system (training provided) 
  • Communicate with SCORES staff and fellow SCORES coaches at your school 
  • Promote teamwork, leadership, and commitment skills 
  • Attend and help at Poetry SLAM (November) and Jamboree (May)
